National Institute of Building Sciences
National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization in the United States that identifies and helps solve problems in the built environment.
It was created by Congress in 1974 through the Housing and Community Development Act.
Governance
- The Board of Directors has 21 members. Each member serves a 3-year term, with about one-third renewing each year.
- The President, with Senate approval, appoints six public-interest members. The other 15 directors are elected from the construction industry and related fields, including labor, product manufacturers, builders, housing management, building standards and codes, fire safety, architects, engineers, public officials, and consumer groups. The board must maintain a majority of public-interest representatives.
- Members may continue serving after their term ends until a successor is elected or confirmed.
Leadership and officers
- The board elects a chair from among its members each year and may elect one or more vice chairs. Terms are one year, and no one can serve more than two consecutive terms as chair or vice chair.
- The board appoints the President and CEO and other executive officers as needed.
Current leadership
- As of September 12, 2024, George K. Guszcza is the President and CEO of NIBS.
