Daven Presgraves is the University Dean's Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Rochester. He earned a B.S. and M.S. at the University of Maryland, College Park, and later an M.S. and a Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Rochester. After his Ph.D., he was an NIH NRSA Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University and an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Munich. His research focuses on sexual selection, meiotic drive, and the evolution of the X chromosome. He helped confirm the “large X-effect,” the idea that the X chromosome plays a key role in driving speciation. In 2003, he won the Dobzhansky Prize from the Society for the Study of Evolution for outstanding work by a young evolutionary biologist. He was the first winner of the prize to be trained by a previous recipient, H. Allen Orr.
