Etwatwa
Etwatwa, also known as Holfontein, is a township in Gauteng, South Africa. It sits about 20 km from Benoni and 24 km from Springs in the Ekurhuleni area, near the Gauteng–Mpumalanga border toward Delmas.
The area includes neighborhoods such as Etwatwa West, Etwatwa East, Quantum, Barcelona, Mkgoba, Bester Homes, Etwatwa Ext 7, Citicon, Etwatwa Ext 9, Etwatwa Ext 10 (Emaphupheni), and Mandela.
History and growth:
- Etwatwa began in 1985 as an overflow settlement from Daveyton.
- It was divided into Etwatwa West and Etwatwa East, with different levels of service.
- Since 1994, formal housing (old apartheid houses and new RDP houses) has been built.
Today:
- The township has schools, a fire station, libraries, parks, and clinics.
- As the population grows, residents are calling for better infrastructure and services.
Transport and development:
- There has long been talk of linking Etwatwa to Daveyton by rail, but this has not happened yet.
- Long-term plans include a rail link.
- A mall is promised in the short to medium term.
