Esporte Clube Cruzeiro
Esporte Clube Cruzeiro, commonly called Cruzeiro-RS, is a Brazilian football club from Cachoeirinha, Rio Grande do Sul. They compete in the Campeonato Gaúcho Série A2, the second division of the state league. Founded on July 14, 1913, Cruzeiro-RS is older than the famous Cruzeiro in Belo Horizonte. The team plays at Arena Cruzeiro, which seats about 16,000 and opened in 2019 after construction began in 2012.
Historically one of Porto Alegre’s main clubs until the 1960s, Cruzeiro-RS won the state championship in 1929 and led the way for RS clubs touring Europe, first visiting in 1953. In 1960 they won an Easter Tournament in East Germany. The club briefly played in Brazil’s national Série D in 2011 but was eliminated in the first stage. Ronaldinho’s father, João de Assis Moreira, had a short spell with Cruzeiro-RS.
