On January 1, 2000 at 6:22 am local time, the 2000 Kipawa earthquake struck parts of Quebec and Ontario, Canada. The quake had a magnitude of 5.2 and a depth of about 14 kilometers. Its epicenter was in Lake Kipawa, about 10 km north of Témiscaming, Quebec, and about 70 km northeast of North Bay, Ontario, in the Western Quebec seismic zone. Shaking was strongest within about 50 km of the epicenter and was felt as far away as Toronto. It was one of the most significant Canadian earthquakes in 2000. The earthquake was caused by thrust faults related to the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben. Minor damage was reported, including fallen light objects, a damaged ventilation pipe, and plaster cracks. Seventeen aftershocks followed. The epicenter is near the site of the 1935 Timiskaming earthquake, in an area with many earthquakes since 1935.
