Emperor, also known in Burmese as အင်ပရား, is a Burmese hard rock and metal band from Yangon. They formed in the 1980s and are led by Zaw Win Htut, the lead singer and guitarist. The band blends Western hard rock and heavy metal with traditional Burmese musical ideas. They helped shape Myanmar’s rock scene and have a solid following at home and among Burmese people abroad. In the 1980s they stood out by playing heavier music while many bands stayed with traditional or softer rock. Their live shows are energetic, with loud guitars, driving drums, and strong vocals, plus Burmese influences. They have released several albums and singles over the years, making important contributions to Myanmar’s rock and metal. Emperor is seen as a pioneer who inspired later Burmese bands.
