Medieval Archaeology is a biannual peer‑reviewed journal that covers the archaeology of the medieval period, especially in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It began in 1957, started by the Society for Medieval Archaeology, and is published for the society by Taylor & Francis. The editor‑in‑chief is Duncan Wright of Newcastle University.

In the 1950s, British archaeology focused mainly on prehistoric and classical periods. The Society created Medieval Archaeology to share information about medieval finds and excavation reports, so early issues often featured many such reports because funding was needed to produce the journal. The magazine helped inspire the creation of other medieval archaeology journals in France, Germany, and Italy.

To mark the Society’s 50th anniversary in 2006, the first 50 volumes were made freely available online via the Archaeology Data Service. Since 2007, abstracts have been translated into French, German, and Italian. The Society also gives the Editor’s Award for outstanding work published in the journal.

The journal was published by Maney Publishing until 2015, when Taylor & Francis took over production after acquiring Maney. Medieval Archaeology is indexed in major bibliographic databases.
