Einar Sveinsson (16 November 1906 – 12 March 1973) was an Icelandic architect who served as City Architect of Reykjavík from 1934 to 1973, helping to shape the city’s look in the mid-20th century. He was the first Icelander to study architecture in Germany, at the Technical University of Darmstadt (1927–1932), earning his degree in 1932. Influenced by the Bauhaus, he introduced functionalist design to Iceland. His notable works include Laugarnesskóli, Melaskóli, Langholtsskóli, Heilsuverndarstöð Reykjavíkur, Borgarspítalinn, Vogaskóli, Laugardalslaug, and the bus terminal at Snorrabraut 56 (co-designed with Ágúst Pálsson). Melaskóli was so admired that foreign dignitaries were brought there for meetings. He was especially skilled at designing interiors. Although his buildings were costly at the time, many have lasted without major renovations, making them cost-effective in the long run.
