Umemulo
Umemulo is a traditional Zulu coming‑of‑age ceremony for women. It is usually done when a girl is 21, but the timing can vary. The ritual shows she is ready for marriage and often includes slaughtering a cow, the Ukusina dance with a spear, and guests giving money and blessings.
The girl stays for seven days in a round hut called a Rondavel with friends and learns songs for the ceremony. On the seventh day, they bathe early in a river. When they return, the girl is presented with a spear and wears the fat from a cow’s stomach (Umhlwehlwe). People sing, dance, and pin money and other gifts on the girl.
After having Umemulo, she is expected to seek a husband and start a family when she feels ready.
