Venezuela at the 2012 Summer Olympics
Venezuela participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London from July 27 to August 12. The team had 69 athletes (43 men and 29 women) across 15 sports, making it Venezuela's seventeenth straight Olympics and their second-largest delegation ever. Fabiola Ramos carried the flag at the opening ceremony, and Jessica López did so at the closing ceremony. Venezuela made its Olympic debut in beach volleyball. Notable athletes included swimmers Andreína and Yanel Pinto, gymnast Jessica López, and cyclist Daniela Larreal, who returned to the Games after eight years. Rubén Limardo won the men’s individual épée, giving Venezuela its first gold medal since 1968 and second in Olympic history. The team finished with 1 gold and no other medals, ranking 50th. The British Embassy in Caracas marked the occasion by inviting Julio César León, the first Venezuelan to compete at the Olympics in 1948.
