List of local nature reserves in Berkshire
Local nature reserves (LNRs) in Berkshire are protected areas designated by local councils under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. They have special local biological or geological value. Councils must care for them—by owning or leasing the land, or by agreement with the owner—and they can use local byelaws to protect them. As of January 2020, Berkshire has 41 LNRs. Of these, five are also Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), two are Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), and four are run by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. Berkshire is in South East England. It borders Hampshire and Surrey to the south, Greater London to the east, Wiltshire to the west, and Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire to the north. The county lies in the Thames and Kennet valleys, with chalk hills in the west. It has a population of more than 860,000. Berkshire no longer has a county council after 1998 and is governed by six unitary authorities: Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough, West Berkshire, Windsor and Maidenhead, and Wokingham.
