E-patient
An e-patient is a health consumer who takes an active role in their own care by researching medical information online and using digital tools. Family and friends who look up information for the patient are also part of this. E-patients often find better health information and services, but their relationship with doctors can change in different ways. The “e” can stand for electronic, or for ideas like equipped, enabled, empowered, or expert.
Research shows e-patients are growing and tend to be curious and independent. In Europe (2011) they were noted as inquisitive and autonomous. A 2012 study found that sharing health videos can reduce privacy but provide social support. A 2017 analysis showed e-patients in health conferences boost information flow and engagement, even though they make up a small share of stakeholders. In other languages, similar terms exist: in Japan, tojisha-kenkyu; in Swedish, spetspatient, a term coined in 2016 by Sara Riggare.
