Durham Energy Institute (DEI) is a research center at Durham University in England. It began in September 2009 to study energy technology and how energy affects society. The Executive Director is Professor Jon Gluyas. DEI works on topics like microalgae biofuels, cellulosic crops, solar power, clean energy generation, geo-energy, energy and society, economics, regulation, policy, fusion energy, and energy decarbonisation. Its advisory board includes Ian Burdon; Benj Sykes (DONG Energy); John Loughhead (UKERC); Helen Moss (IBM); and Andrew Mill (Narec). The Durham Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy is part of DEI and offers interdisciplinary PhD training in energy. The MSc Energy and Society is led by Durham’s Anthropology Department, in partnership with DEI and other departments (Engineering, Social Sciences, Humanities). The course is unique because it combines social science perspectives with energy and development, showing how they influence each other.
