The City of Joondalup is a local government area in Perth’s northern suburbs, Western Australia. Its main center is the city’s CBD, Joondalup, and it also includes the town centers of Hillarys and Warwick. The area covers about 98.9 square kilometers and has a population of around 160,000 (2021).

History in brief
Before 1998, Joondalup was part of the City of Wanneroo. It became its own city on 1 July 1998 after an independent commission recommended separating the coastal area. The region grew quickly in the 1980s and 1990s as the government planned a northern regional centre, helped by the extension of the Mitchell Freeway and the Joondalup railway line.

Government and people
The City is governed by a directly elected mayor and twelve councillors (two per ward, across six wards). The mayor (as of 2025) is Daniel Kingston. The council chambers are in Joondalup’s CBD.

Geography and boundaries
Joondalup stretches from Kinross in the north to Warwick in the south, with the coast on the west and Lake Joondalup to the east. It is bordered by Wanneroo to the north and by ocean to the west, with the eastern boundary running near Lake Joondalup.
