Duncan Regehr
Duncan Peter Regehr, born October 5, 1952, in Lethbridge, Alberta, is a Canadian multimedia artist and actor. He grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, with his British-born mother Dorothy Mary and Russian father Peter Regehr, an artist. He began broadcasting at age 14 on CBC and trained as a Shakespearean stage actor before moving to Hollywood in 1980.
In film and television, Regehr has played a wide range of roles. He starred as Prince Dirk Blackpool in Wizards and Warriors (1983), played Lydon the gladiator in The Last Days of Pompeii (1984), portrayed Errol Flynn in My Wicked, Wicked Ways (1985), and appeared in The Blue and the Gray (1982) as Captain Randolph. One of his best-known parts is Don Diego De La Vega / Zorro on The Family Channel’s Zorro, appearing in 88 episodes from 1990 to 1993. He also appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation as Ronin in the episode “Sub Rosa” and in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Shakaar Edon, along with guest spots on Cybill, Murder, She Wrote and Hotel. He moved to Los Angeles with his wife Catherine to pursue film work.
Regehr has painted and drawn since childhood. He first exhibited his art in 1974 at the Stratford Festival in Ontario and has since shown work across Canada, Europe and the United States. His art is in international collections, including China’s Jilin Collection, Copenhagen’s Kunsthallen, the Getty Museum’s Focus on the Masters Archives, and Scotland’s Syllavethy Collection. His monograph The Dragon’s Eye: An Artist’s View received acclaim. He won the American Vision Award of Distinction in the Arts in 1996 and was named a Royal Canadian Artist with honors by the Royal Canadian Academy of Art in 2000. In 2008 the University of Victoria awarded him an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree. His work continues to be shown in galleries.
