September Barricade Monument
The September Barricade Monument is a brutalist sculpture in Warsaw, Poland. It sits on Grójecka Street in the Ochota district, near the intersection with Opaczewska Street. The monument commemorates the barricade built by the Polish Armed Forces during the Siege of Warsaw in September 1939, which was used from 8 September to 27 September. It features three large concrete sculptures that form the dates 8-IX (8 September), 1939, and 27-IX (27 September). Designed by Julian Pałka, it was unveiled on 12 September 1979 for the 40th anniversary of the siege and renovated in 2020.
The three sculptures are arranged with two along the road and the middle one standing perpendicular to the street, between the traffic lanes, facing south along the Grójecka axis. The middle piece once carried more than 40 commemorative plaques placed there by veterans groups; these were removed during the 2020 renovation. Nearby is the Poplar of the Defenders, a Canadian poplar designated a natural monument to honor the soldiers who defended the city in 1939.
