Dubai
Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates and the capital of the Emirate of Dubai. It sits on the Persian Gulf coast and is famous for its bold skyline and modern architecture. As of 2025, about 4 million people live in Dubai, with many expatriates making up the population. The wider Dubai area, including nearby regions, has around 5–6 million people.
Dubai started as a small pearling and fishing village. It grew into a trading hub after it became a free port in 1901 and expanded along Dubai Creek. Oil was found in 1966, but today it plays a small role in the economy. Dubai’s wealth now comes from trade, tourism, aviation, finance, and real estate. Big projects like the Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, and The World islands helped put Dubai on the world map. Dubai joined the United Arab Emirates in 1971.
