McAllen (also MacAllen) is a Scottish and Irish surname from Scottish Gaelic. It means “son of Ailean” and comes from Scotland. In Ireland the name often appears as McAllen rather than MacAllen. The first known bearers in Ireland arrived in the 15th century in County Donegal, among Gallowglass mercenary families who supported the north Irish nobility.
