Vallone dei Mulini

Vallone dei Mulini, or Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills), is a historic valley in Sorrento, Italy. It is famous for stone flour mills that were built in the 13th century to grind grain. The valley formed about 37,000 years ago when water flowed onto a tufa plain after the Campi Flegrei eruption. A sawmill also operated there to cut wood, and it stayed open until the early 10th century.

In 1866, Piazza Tasso was created, which isolated the mill and the surrounding sea. The building was closed and abandoned in the 1940s. Vallone dei Mulini sits behind Piazza Tasso and is carved by two rivers, Casarlano-Cesarano and S. Antonino, giving the area very high humidity.

The valley is considered one of the most enchanting views of the Sorrento Peninsula and is known for its unique plants, many growing among ferns. The unusual plants may thrive due to the area’s moisture, limited ventilation, sun exposure, and the presence of tuff.
