Madison Square Garden Open Tennis Championship

The Madison Square Garden Open Tennis Championship, also known as the Madison Square Garden Challenge Trophy and New York Indoor, was a short‑lived international indoor tennis tournament for men and women. It was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on indoor carpet courts from 1968 to 1970. It was run by the USNLTA and was part of the ILTF World Circuit during its existence.

The first two editions used a standard knockout format. The 1970 edition used a round‑robin format with a third‑place playoff, a fourth‑place playoff, and a final match.

In 1971, Madison Square Garden did not renew the tournament. The US Tennis Association sought a replacement indoor event in New York, which led to the Clean Air Classic, played at multiple venues in Hawthorne, New Jersey and at the Vanderbilt International Racquet Club, with the final at the Seventh Regiment Armory.
