Tirur Nambissan
Tirur Nambissan, born Narayanan Nambissan in 1942, was a famous Kathakali singer from Tirur in Kerala, India.
He began learning music at age seven while in school. Tragedy struck early—by his mid-teens his mother, three brothers, and father had died, and his younger sister had taken her own life. Despite these hardships, his teachers saw his talent and guided him to Kerala Kalamandalam, a renowned music and arts school.
At Kalamandalam, he studied Kathakali music under teachers including Neelakantan Nambisan, Sivaraman Nair, and Kavungal Madhava Panikkar, alongside peers like Madambi Subramanian Namboodiri, Hyderali, and Sankaran Embranthiri. The training was strict and demanding, but it helped him and his classmates become outstanding artists. He completed eight years of study with top grades and began his career as a leading Kathakali musician.
After finishing the course, he faced financial difficulties but stayed true to Kathakali. He believed in preserving the traditional sopana-sangeetham style and did not want to mix in other experimental sounds. He felt that Kathakali music has its own identity and uses fixed ragas to express each character. He used his own creativity within that traditional framework to bring out the bhavas (emotions) of the characters.
Nambissan taught at several institutions, including Preur Gandhi Sevasadan in New Delhi, Bombay, Unnayivariyer Smaraka Kalanilayam in Irinjalakkuda, Parassini Kaliyogam, Peingode Kathakali Promotion Society, and Kerala Kalamandalam. His students included Sadanam Jyothi, Radhakrishnan, Poombully Vasudevan Namboodirippad, and Vellinezhi Achuthan Kutty. He performed as the main singer (ponnani) and as a supporting singer (shakidi) on thousands of stages in Kerala and beyond, and he was a long-time main singer for the Parassikkadavu Muthappan Kathakali Yogam.
Tirur Nambissan died on 10 August 1994 from a brain hemorrhage after years of diabetes and other illnesses. He is remembered as a devoted guardian of Kathakali music and its traditional style.
