Houston Lightning

The Houston Lightning were a short-lived indoor football team based in Houston, Texas. Founded in 2009, they planned to start playing in the Southern Indoor Football League in 2010, with home games at Reliant Arena. The team colors were black, gold, and white. Wilbert Brown was president and Bryan Blake was the head coach. They did not win any championships or division titles.

The Lightning would have been the second indoor/arena team to play in Houston, following the Arena Football League’s Houston Thunderbears (1996–2001). The Greater Houston area had other indoor teams in the past, including the Texas Copperheads (NIFL, later af2, 2006–2008) in Katy and the Katy Ruff Riders (Intense Football League) from 2007 to 2008.

Their logo featured a Bible verse, Isaiah 40:31. On March 10, 2010, the Lightning announced they were suspending operations, saying the arena had reneged on a lease and there wasn’t time to find another home.
