Deportivo Municipal
Deportivo Municipal, officially Club Centro Deportivo Municipal, is a Peruvian football club from Lima. It was founded on July 27, 1935 to represent the city’s municipality and quickly became one of Peru’s best-known teams. The club’s nicknames include La Academia (The Academy) and Muni, among others.
The team plays in a white kit with a red diagonal stripe, blue shorts and white socks, with several alternative colors used in other seasons. Their home stadium is Estadio Municipal de Chorillos in Chorrillos, with a capacity around 15,000; they have also used Estadio Iván Elías Moreno (11,000). In 2025 they returned to Chorillos after renovations.
Municipal enjoyed a golden era early in its history, winning four league titles (1938, 1940, 1943, 1950) and three Segunda División titles (1968, 2006, 2014). They have been relegated a few times (1967, 2000, 2007) but earned promotions back to the top flight on several occasions. The club has competed in international tournaments, including the Copa Libertadores (1982 and 2017) and the Copa Sudamericana (2016 and 2019).
In recent years, Municipal faced financial problems and licensing issues. They were relegated to Liga 2 in 2023 and, after sanctions in 2024, moved down to Liga 3. Hugo Sotil, who came through the youth ranks, is one of the club’s most famous players, and the “Tres Gatitos” (three kittens) — a notable trio in its history — remains part of Municipal’s lore.
