OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center
OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center – Urbana is a 210-bed, not-for-profit hospital in Urbana, Illinois. It is part of OSF HealthCare, based in Peoria, and is accredited by the Joint Commission and CARF. The hospital’s roots go back to Burnham City Hospital (founded 1894) and Mercy Hospital (founded 1919). The two hospitals merged in 1989 to form Burnham Mercy Covenant Medical Center. In 1997, it joined Provena Health and was renamed Provena Covenant Medical Center. In 2026, the hospital expanded its behavioral health services and was renamed OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center – Urbana.
Key services include regional emergency medical services, inpatient psychiatry, home health, home care, and hospice, along with outpatient clinics for cardiovascular care, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics. As Heart of Mary Medical Center, the facility was recognized by HealthGrades for total knee replacement and joint replacement surgery.
Tax-exempt status history: In 2002, Champaign County challenged Provena Covenant’s charitable tax-exempt status. The Illinois Department of Revenue denied the exemptions, and after court reviews the Illinois Supreme Court in 2010 upheld the denial, noting that only a small portion of admissions received charitable discounts. Provena Covenant noted it provided substantial community benefits, including more than $38 million in free care in 2008.
