X-Men Black: A quick guide

What is it?
X-Men Black is a five-issue, weekly comic series from Marvel in October 2018. Each issue is a standalone one-shot focusing on a different X-Men villain: Magneto, Mojo, Mystique, Juggernaut, and Emma Frost. It’s the third color-themed X-title after X-Men Blue and X-Men Gold. The line was announced at a San Diego Comic-Con panel and was created as a weekly anthology rather than a single Magneto-centered series. All covers were drawn by J. Scott Campbell, and each issue had its own creative team. The series also included backup stories about Apocalypse titled The Degeneration, written by Lonnie Nadler.

What happened with the announcement
When X-Men Black was first revealed, only the Magneto issue’s title and cover were shown, which led to some confusion that it would be an ongoing Magneto series. Marvel later clarified that X-Men Black is a weekly anthology featuring multiple characters, each with its own story and team.

Sales and reception (October 2018)
- Emma Frost was the best-seller in the line, about 55,731 copies.
- Magneto followed with around 49,660 copies.
- Mystique sold about 43,039 copies.
- Juggernaut sold about 41,092 copies.
- Mojo sold about 37,034 copies.

What critics said (high-level)
- Emma Frost (ending the series) generally got strong reviews, with praise for its dark humor and the portrayal of Emma, though some noted the art team changes could cause inconsistencies.
- Magneto’s issue drew mixed reactions: some critics felt Magneto’s portrayal and character focus didn’t fully land, while others found it interesting and gave it credit for pushing his story forward.
- Mojo’s issue was well-received by many for its write-up and art, with reviewers noting it balanced old-school vibes with a modern touch.
- Mystique’s issue was praised for its detailed art and strong depiction of the character, though some reviewers felt the story didn’t have a standout moment.
- Juggernaut’s installment received mixed opinions about the story’s originality and the art’s execution, with some standout scenes but overall a “mixed bag” feel.
- The trade paperback collection released in 2019 earned about 7 out of 10 from AIPT, describing the set as a mostly good, villain-centered collection that gives the characters depth.

Artwork and style
The art varied by issue, with critics often calling out Dalibor Talajić’s Magneto visuals as older and more regal in some depictions and more fragile in others. Nick Bradshaw, Marco Failla, Shawn Crystal, and others contributed different looks across the five issues, and Chris Bachalo’s work on Emma Frost drew particular praise for design and framing.

Overall
X-Men Black is best understood as a short, varied look at five famous X-Men villains, each told in its own voice and style. Some stories hit a stronger emotional or thematic note than others, but the series is remembered for giving each antagonist a distinct arc and visual treatment within a single, cohesive mini-line.
