Andrew Jackson Beard (March 29, 1849 – May 10, 1921) was an African American inventor who improved the automatic railroad car coupler. He patented five improvements to the coupler in 1897 and 1899 and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio in 2006 for this work.

Beard was born a slave on a small farm near East Lake, Alabama. After emancipation, he married and became a farmer in Pinson, near Birmingham. He later ran his own flour mill, which he operated successfully starting in 1872.

He patented two early farming tools: in 1881 he created a double plow that let farmers adjust the distance between the plow plates (patent 240,642), which he sold in 1884 for $4,000. In 1887 he patented another double plow with adjustable pitch (patent 347,220) and sold it for $5,200, then invested his earnings in real estate.

Beard also studied engines. In 1882 he patented a rotary steam engine (patents 433,847 and 478,271). In the 1890s, while living near East Lake, he patented improvements to the Janney coupler (patent 138,405).

His most famous work came with railroad car couplers. Beard’s improvements to the automatic coupler were patented as U.S. Patent 594,059 in 1897 and U.S. Patent 624,901 in 1899. His design included two horizontal jaws that automatically locked when cars joined. Beard had lost a leg in a car-coupling accident.

In 1887 Congress passed the Federal Safety Appliance Act, which required automatic couplers on trains. Although Beard’s improvements were significant, it is not clear how widely they were adopted, as other designs became standard over time. Later in life he is described as paralyzed and impoverished, and he died in Birmingham in 1921.

Beard’s contributions were recognized when he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006 for his work on railroad car couplers. He was also known in his community as a deacon at the Second Baptist Church in Birmingham.
