1966 Belgian Grand Prix
1966 Belgian Grand Prix: A Formula One race at Spa-Francorchamps on 12 June. It was the second race of the season, run over 28 laps of a 14.1 km circuit (about 395 km) in overcast, wet conditions. John Surtees took pole position in a Ferrari and also had the fastest lap.
The race was won by Surtees, finishing 42 seconds ahead of Jochen Rindt in a Cooper-Maserati, with Lorenzo Bandini third for Ferrari. It was Surtees’ fourth career win and his first since 1964 Italian Grand Prix. Bandini’s two podiums helped him lead the world championship after two races.
The start was chaotic due to heavy rain: more than half the field crashed on the first lap, and only seven cars remained by lap 2. Notable moments included Bonnier’s car perched on a parapet after going off at Burnenville, Jackie Stewart being stuck upside down in fuel after crashing into a pole and a ditch, with Graham Hill and Bob Bondurant helping to rescue him. Brabham avoided a spectacular crash and rejoined, while Jim Clark’s engine flooded from water and he retired. The first lap was run under green flags throughout. Parts of the race were filmed for the movie Grand Prix.
