Dawn Thewlis
Dawn Thewlis is a broadcaster and journalist from the North East of England. She is best known for presenting the BBC Look North program for the North East and Cumbria, and for her earlier work with ITV Tyne Tees.
Her career began at ITV Tyne Tees in 1987, where she worked as a presenter and producer until 2008. She joined the BBC in 2009, serving as a sports reporter and continuing to present Look North for the region. She has also hosted various other programs, including North East Tonight Election Special, Summer Sunday, A Current Affair, and The Football Show.
Beyond news, Thewlis has taken part in community and charity activities. In 2008 she walked the Butterwick Midnight Walk with Pam Royle to raise funds for Butterwick Hospice. In 2011 she hosted a gala dinner celebrating rugby player Micky Ward’s 13-year career. In 2015 she served on the judging panel for Northumbria University’s Business School students. In 2020 she presented an award at the North East Royal Television Society Awards. In 2023 she joined a national journalists’ strike outside BBC Newcastle over proposed local service cuts.
Dawn was born and raised in Tyneside. She is married with two sons, and her father was Joe Thewlis, a former Newcastle United football player and cricketer. In 2022 she won Best Presenter at the North East Royal Television Society Awards.
