Michigan Technological University (MTU) is a public research university in Houghton, Michigan. It started in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School, the first college in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It became the Michigan College of Mines in 1897, then the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1927, and finally Michigan Technological University in 1964 when it changed to a full university.

MTU has five colleges: Engineering; Computing; Sciences and Arts; Business; and Forest Resources and Environmental Science. It offers more than 140 degree programs and serves about 7,000 students, both undergraduates and graduates. The main campus covers 925 acres overlooking Portage Lake and includes 36 buildings. The university is well known for engineering and the sciences and has many research centers and institutes. It is classified as a top-tier research university and spends a significant amount on research each year.

Athletics are a big part of MTU. The Huskies compete in NCAA Division II in the GLIAC, while the men’s ice hockey team plays in Division I in the CCHA. The campus also hosts outdoor and recreational facilities like Mont Ripley ski hill, the Tech Trails for cross-country skiing and biking, and the Ford Center for education and natural resources programs.

MTU emphasizes hands-on learning through its Enterprise Program, where students work on real projects in areas such as technology and business. There are many student clubs and organizations, and several fraternities and sororities on campus. The university aims to educate leaders who can solve real-world problems.

Admissions are selective, with students coming from Michigan, other parts of the United States, and abroad. The campus is known for a strong student‑faculty relationship and a favorable student‑to‑faculty ratio.

Notable facts include recognition by FIRE in 2024 for academic freedom and tolerance, and a 2024 ranking by Washington Monthly for the university’s public-service impact. MTU has about 79,000 alumni worldwide and around 500 faculty members. The school also has a tradition of outdoor athletics and unique campus events that highlight the region’s winter sports culture.
