David Sutherland (baseball)
David Andrew Sutherland (born 2 May 1985) is a former Australian professional baseball player who played as a first baseman for the Brisbane Bandits. Nicknamed Goofy for his tall, lanky look, he is the Bandits’ most-capped player with 379 appearances and the first player in the Australian Baseball League to reach 200 career hits (achieved on 5 November 2015).
Sutherland represented Australia in the 2002 World Junior Baseball Championship (U18) and was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers at age 17. He made his senior debut in 2003 Claxton Shield for the Queensland Rams, batting .375/.483/.500 in seven games. In 2005 he had a standout year, hitting .474/.474/.526 in five Claxton Shield games for Queensland and .336/.422/.453 with 44 runs and 47 RBI in 66 Pioneer League games for the Ogden Raptors. The Dodgers released him in 2007 after a season with the Great Lakes Loons.
Sutherland has played every season in the Australian Baseball League and is the Bandits’ all-time leader in games, hits, and home runs. He has also been part of the Australian national team setup, selected for the 2016 Haarlem Baseball Week, the 2018 exhibition games against Japan, and the 2019 WBSC Premier12.
