David DeCoteau is an American film director and producer born on January 5, 1962, in Portland, Oregon. He was adopted at birth; his father had Native American heritage and his mother died of cancer when he was eight. As a teen he loved movies and started working as a theater projectionist, and he began in the film business at 18. He got his start with Roger Corman in 1980 as a production assistant at New World Pictures. In 1986 he directed and produced his first feature for Charles Band. He founded Rapid Heart Pictures and made films such as A Talking Cat!?! and the 1313 horror series. DeCoteau is known for quickly making films in different genres to fit what buyers want, and he has used many pseudonyms including Ellen Cabot, Julian Breen, Victoria Sloan, Richard Chasen, Jack Reed, Martin Tate, Joseph Tennent, and Mary Crawford. He directed about 102 films between 1986 and 2014. He lives in British Columbia and Los Angeles and is gay.
