Cypress, Illinois

Cypress is a small village in Johnson County. It had 217 residents in 2020. The village covers about 0.76 square miles, almost all land. It sits in the Cache River basin in southwestern Johnson County, near Karnak and Vienna. Illinois Route 37 passes through Cypress, and to the east lies the Heron Pond – Little Black Slough Nature Preserve.

Cypress began in the late 1890s as a stop on the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad. A post office moved from Gray's Mill to Cypress, and the name was likely chosen for the cypress trees in the Cache River area. Cypress Grade School was built in 1917, damaged by a tornado in 2002, and a new school opened about four years later.

Population and households: in 2020, there were 86 households and 51 families. The village is mostly White (about 96%). The median age is 35.2. The median household income is about $37,500, and per capita income is about $18,240. About 23% of people live in poverty, including about 25% of those under 18.

There are no airports or active bus services in Cypress. The old Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad tracks remain but have been unused since 1984. Bicycling is common in the village.
