Daniel Freitas (cyclist)
Daniel Freitas is a Portuguese road cyclist born on May 10, 1991, in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. He last rode for the UCI Continental team Feira dos Sofás–Boavista and is currently suspended after a three-year ban imposed by the UCI in May 2023 for doping.
Early career and notable results
- In 2007, Freitas won two Portuguese cadet championships.
- At the 2009 Volta a Portugal Juniors, he tested positive for morphine twice. He was initially the race winner but was later disqualified in favor of teammate Rafael Reis and received an 18-month suspension, which was later reduced.
- He turned professional in 2011 with Barbot–Efapel and won Circuito da Malveira in 2012.
- He returned to the amateur ranks in 2013 with Anicolor, winning three races including the Grand Prix of Mortágua, and finished third in the Clássica de Pascua and seventh in the Volta a Portugal do Futuro.
Professional years and highlights
- 2016–2018: Raced for W52 / FC Porto / Porto Canal. Notable results included fourth place at Clássica da Primavera and fourth at the Vuelta a La Rioja in Spain, plus a podium in the Volta à Bairrada (third) and strong showings in other Portuguese Cup events.
- 2019–2020: Rode for Miranda–Mortágua.
- 2021–2022: Rode for Rádio Popular–Boavista.
- Last team: Feira dos Sofás–Boavista.
Freitas has had a career with early promise, several national-level results, and a controversial doping-related setback that led to a lengthy ban.
