Red Hook (village), New York
Red Hook is a small village in Dutchess County, New York. It’s in the town of Red Hook along U.S. Route 9, near Bard College and the Hudson River. The village covers about 1.1 square miles (2.9 square kilometers), mostly land, with a small amount of water. The population was 1,975 at the 2020 census.
The name comes from Dutch words Roode Hoeck, meaning red peninsula, a reference to the bright fall colors in the area. The village was settled in the early 1700s, with Nicholas Bonesteel and his wife among the first settlers around 1723. Red Hook is part of the New York metropolitan area. Public transit in the area is provided by Dutchess County Public Transit, route C.
