DN5
DN5 is a key national road in Romania that connects Bucharest with the Bulgarian border at Giurgiu. It runs for about 67 km through Ilfov and Giurgiu counties and is part of the E70/E85 routes. The road is maintained by the national road company.
DN5 is a major link between the capital, Bulgaria, and Southeast Europe, and it has been upgraded as a priority express route between 2006 and 2009. From Bucharest to Giurgiu, most of the road is a non-grade-separated dual carriageway with no emergency lane; access uses roundabouts. Some sections, like the Adunații-Copăceni bypass, are built to motorway standards with full separation of directions.
A new Eastern Giurgiu bypass, called DN5D, began construction in 2020 and opened on December 20, 2021. It covers 5.72 km and was built by the Austrian company Porr for about 106 million lei (excluding VAT). The bypass, made with concrete, is sometimes called the German motorway and helps divert through-traffic away from Giurgiu toward Bulgaria.
On the Bulgarian side, there are plans for a new unified road and rail Danube crossing, with a motorway-style road in that area. In Romania, the long-term plan envisions doubling the DN5 with the A5 motorway on the Romanian side.
