West End, New Zealand
West End is a suburb of Timaru, in the South Canterbury region of New Zealand’s South Island. It sits to the west of Timaru’s town centre and includes Fraser Park, a large multi‑sport stadium also known as Alpine Energy Stadium.
The Fraser Park area covers about 1.22 square kilometres and had an estimated population of around 2,920 in June 2025, with a population density of about 2,390 people per square kilometre. In 2018 the area had 2,751 people. The community is mostly European/Pākehā, with Māori, Pacific Islanders and Asians also living there. The median age is higher than the national average, and about half the people have no religion while roughly 38% are Christian. A little over 13% have a bachelor’s degree or higher, and about a quarter have no formal qualifications. The median income is around $30,500, with about half of residents employed full‑time.
Local schools include Timaru Boys’ High School, a single‑sex secondary school for years 9–13, with about 770 students as of October 2025; it opened in 1880. Timaru Girls’ High School started on the same site. Bluestone School is a coeducational primary school for years 1–8, with about 480 students as of October 2025. Bluestone School was established in 2005 on the Timaru West site after a merger that formed Timaru West and Timaru Main; Timaru West originally opened in 1913 and became a separate school in 1923.
