Coal City Marathon
Coal City Marathon is an annual international road race in Enugu State, Nigeria. The 2018 edition, held on 24 November, was the first international half marathon in the South-East region. The 21-kilometer race started at Michael Okpara Square in Independence Layout, Enugu, and finished at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Ogui Road. More than 1,320 runners from Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia and Cameroon took part.
The half marathon is certified by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), with routes inspected and approved by officials. The 2019 edition was planned for November, according to the AFN’s tentative programme, and listed as one of five upcoming races for Nigerians in 2019.
In 2018, three Nigerians and three Kenyans won prizes. The winner received $3,500, with $3,000 for the first runner-up and $2,500 for the second runner-up.
Sponsors include Red Bull Energy Drink, Three Crowns Milk, Kwese Cable Television, and Ethiopian Airlines. The event is organized by Ndiokwelu Nzube and began in 2018. There were 1,320 participants in 2018.
