Palazzo Buzi, Orvieto
Palazzo Buzi is a Renaissance palace in Orvieto, Umbria, Italy. It is located at Via Postierla 9, on Piazza Marconi, next to the San Bernardino convent. The building was completed in 1581 and designed by architect Ippolito Scalza for the aristocrat Vicenzo Buzi. The site originally had a home and tower belonging to the Filippeschi family, which was likely confiscated in 1281 by the Guelph bishop Francesco Monaldeschi and used as his residence. The nuns of nearby San Bernardino acquired the site in the 16th century. In 1581 Vicenzo Buzi bought the vineyards and orchards from the nuns and had Scalza build the palace on the site.
In the late 18th century the Gualterio family became the owners and swapped the ornate Mannerist stone portal of Palazzo Buzi with a simpler portal from Palazzo Gualterio on Via del Duomo. The palace was purchased in 1899 by the Padri Mercedari, who still own it today and use part of the building as a chapel within the monastery. The main floor was frescoed around 1585 with mythological and Old Testament scenes by Cesare Nebbia and Giovanni Battista Lombardelli; some works were replaced in the 19th century by frescoes by Mariano Piervittori. In more recent times the palace has also been used as an inn called Villa Mercede inside the monastery.
