Club Filter Melbourne
Club Filter was a landmark techno night in Melbourne, held upstairs at the Lounge on 243 Swanston Street. It ran every Wednesday from 1992 to 2003, making it the city’s and Australia’s longest-running techno night. It was run by DJs Jason Rudeboy and Mad Rod. The night showcased a global mix of techno and club sounds, drew on the gay scene for its vibe, and featured regular live performances from electro poets to drag shows.
In its early years Filter leaned toward acid house and early hardcore techno, then moved through drum & bass and toward the sounds of Detroit, Chicago, New York, Berlin, and beyond. The music crossed many labels, including Djax, Tresor, Drumcode, Stay Up Forever, and more.
The club earned recognition from international press. Dom Phillips of Mixmag called it a wicked club that felt international, and Zebra Magazine in Inpress described it as a cultural icon in Melbourne’s dance scene. In 2001 it celebrated its ninth anniversary with a webcast.
Filter hosted many international DJs and live acts, alongside a strong lineup of local Melbourne artists, and collaborated with local labels such as IF? Records and Psy-Harmonics.
In 2003, after 11 years and nearly 600 consecutive Wednesdays, Club Filter closed. It was briefly followed by Jack the Basics (launched by the Melbourne Techno Collective) in late 2003, but that project faded by late 2004.
