Vaanam (Sky) is a 2011 Tamil-language action-drama directed by Krish. It’s a remake of Krish’s own Telugu film Vedam (2010) and features a big ensemble cast including Silambarasan TR, Bharath, Prakash Raj, Anushka Shetty, Santhanam, Sonia Agarwal, and Saranya Ponvannan. The music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The film runs for about 161 minutes and was released on 29 April 2011.

The story follows five people from different backgrounds whose lives intersect on New Year’s Eve at a Chennai hospital during a terrorist attack. Thillai “Cable” Raja is a poor cable operator who pretends to be rich to win his girlfriend Priya. He’s joined by his best friend Seenu and a bhajan singer named Ganesh. Bharath Chakravarthy is an aspiring rock musician from Bangalore whose life is out of balance as he tries to chase his dream while dealing with family expectations. Saroja is a sex worker who runs from danger to start over with her sister Karpooram. Rahimuddin Qureshi and his wife Zara have lost twins in a riot, and Rahim comes to Chennai to locate his younger brother amid a tense clash with a harsh police officer. Lakshmi, the daughter-in-law of a poor weaver, travels to Chennai with her father-in-law to raise money and protect her child.

When the hospital becomes the target of a terrorist attack, these characters’ paths cross and they join a group of survivors. Raja and Bharath perform acts of courage, while Rahim fights to protect those around him. Saroja and Karpooram seek safety and a new life, and Lakshmi faces a heart-wrenching choice. The plot builds toward a dramatic climax as Raja sacrifices himself to stop the terrorists, Bharath is left with a lost hand but is hailed as a hero, and the remaining characters find some measure of redemption and peace.

Vaanam was produced by VTV Ganesh and R. Ganesh, with Cloud Nine Movies distributing the film. The music, five tracks in total, helped promote the movie, including the single Evan Di Unna Pethan. The film was praised for its engaging, multi-narrative structure and strong performances, though some critics noted that a few story strands weren’t equally compelling.

Awards and reception: Silambarasan won the ITFA Best Actor Award, and Santhanam received the Chennai Times Award for Best Actor in a Comic Role. The movie sparked discussions about its lyrics in a song that drew criticism from a women’s-rights group, which led to debates about censorship and creative expression. Despite mixed commentary on certain elements, Vaanam performed well at the box office and is remembered for its emotional climax and the way it tied together multiple lives in one city on a night of hope and danger.
