Charles Payson (May 2, 1837 – July 11, 1913) was a U.S. diplomat from Massachusetts. He served as Third Assistant Secretary of State from 1878 to 1881. In 1881, Secretary of State James G. Blaine removed Payson so his son could take the position. Payson then became the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to Denmark, serving from 1881 to 1882. After 1882, the Payson family lived mainly in Europe. He died July 11, 1913, at the Hôtel Bernascon in Aix-les-Bains, France, and was buried in Vevey, Switzerland. His wife Fanny was the daughter of Cadwallader C. Washburn, governor of Wisconsin.
