Ken Rosewall defeated defending champion Arthur Ashe in the final to win the men's singles title. It was Rosewall's third Australian Open singles title and seventh Grand Slam singles title overall. He did not lose a set during the tournament, the first time a man achieved that at a Grand Slam in the Open Era. All seeds received a bye into the second round.
