Charles J. Sherr
Charles J. Sherr (born 1944 in New York City) is a scientist who chairs the Tumor Cell Biology Department at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He studies tumor suppressor genes, cell division, and how these processes relate to cancer, including the role of cyclin-dependent kinases. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and an MD/PhD from New York University in 1972. After a pathology residency at Bellevue Hospital, he joined the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Cancer Institute in 1973 and became staff there in 1975. In 1977 he led the viral pathology section of the Division of Cancer Cause and Prevention. Sherr moved to St. Jude in 1983 and became an HHMI Investigator in 1988. He has received several awards for his work on the cell cycle and cancer growth. He is married to biologist Martine Roussel and has three children.
