Rangasthalam
Rangasthalam is a 2018 Telugu-language action thriller directed by Sukumar. The film, produced by Mythri Movie Makers, stars Ram Charan and Samantha along with Jagapathi Babu, Aadhi Pinisetty, Prakash Raj and several others in key supporting roles. Set in a fictional village in the 1980s, it follows two brothers who challenge the village’s corrupt ruling class and its powerful cooperative society.
The story centers on Chittibabu, a gentle, partly deaf young man played by Ram Charan, and his elder brother Kumar Babu. After Kumar Babu returns from the Persian Gulf, the brothers confront the village’s Panchayat president, Phanindra Bhupathi, who uses a brutal, exploitative system to control loans, land and people. Chittibabu, who communicates through his hearing aid, navigates love with Ramalakshmi and vouches to stand up to Bhupathi’s regime. As Kumar Babu campaigns to end Bhupathi’s 30-year unopposed rule, the brothers uncover dark secrets about the Society’s corruption and the violence it engenders. The plot thickens with personal loyalties, village politics and a series of murders that threaten the entire community. The climactic revelations reveal a web of deceit: the man who killed Kumar Babu was Dakshina Murthy, a local MLA with his own ambitions, who had motive rooted in caste and power. Chittibabu ultimately confronts Murthy, and in a final turn of justice, emerges as the village’s moral force. Rangamma is elected Panchayat President, and the film closes on a note of hope as Chittibabu and Ramalakshmi look to the future.
Rangasthalam was widely praised for Sukumar’s writing and the performances, especially Ram Charan and Jagapathi Babu. Critics highlighted the film’s grounded, rural atmosphere, its strong character work and the way the story unfolds in a near-documentary rhythm. Some reviews noted the movie’s lengthy runtime, but many agreed the slow pace suits the plot’s build-up and emotional stakes. The film became a major commercial success, grossing around ₹216 crore worldwide and marking a high point in Charan’s career.
Production and style stood out as well. The film was largely shot on a purpose-built village set in Hyderabad, with around 400 people working on the build for months. It was one of the first Indian films to be shot entirely with Red Helium 8K cameras, chosen for its ability to capture a rich, earthy 1980s look. Devi Sri Prasad composed the soundtrack, with lyrics by Chandrabose. The music and sound design were especially noted for complementing the film’s rural setting and tension-filled moments, earning the film the National Film Award for Best Audiography.
Rangasthalam has left a lasting impact, earning a place among notable Telugu films of the decade. It was later released in dubbed versions across multiple languages—Tamil, Malayalam, Bhojpuri and Hindi—with a Kannada-dubbed release in 2019. It’s been recognized by critics and readers alike as a landmark rural drama that blends political commentary with a character-driven story, celebrated for its performances, craft and emotional punch.
