Murder of Darcey Freeman
Murder of Darcey Freeman — easy version
In Melbourne, Australia, on January 29, 2009, Arthur Freeman killed his daughter, Darcey Iris Freeman, who was 4 years old. Freeman stopped his car on the West Gate Bridge during the morning rush hour, took Darcey to the railing, and dropped her 58 meters into the water. He drove away, and Darcey was later found and taken to hospital, where she died.
Freeman was arrested and charged with murder. The case drew a lot of attention because Darcey’s two brothers witnessed part of the incident from the car, and it happened during a heatwave.
On March 28, 2011, a jury found Freeman guilty of murder. He was sentenced on April 11, 2011 to life in prison with a minimum 32-year term before he could be considered for parole. He appealed in May 2011, but the appeal failed.
The murder led to the installation of anti-suicide barriers on the West Gate Bridge. The case was also featured in media, including a Crimes That Shook Australia episode.
