1974 in aviation was once called the worst year for airlines. The deadliest crash was Turkish Airlines Flight 981, a DC-10, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Paris, France, on 3 March 1974, killing all 346 people aboard. It was the deadliest aviation accident at the time, more than doubling the previous record. The 981 crash held that record until the Tenerife airport disaster in March 1977 and remained the deadliest single-aircraft accident until August 1985, when Japan Airlines Flight 123 crashed. It is still one of the deadliest aviation accidents in history.
