Carrier Strike Group 9 (CSG-9) is a U.S. Navy carrier strike group. It was redesignated Carrier Strike Group 9 in 2004 and is part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Its flagship is the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), and the group also includes Carrier Air Wing 11, the cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG-70), and destroyers USS John S. McCain (DDG-56), USS Halsey (DDG-97), and USS Daniel Inouye (DDG-118).

CSG-9’s job is to train its ships and air squadrons and to be ready for deployment. When deployed, it operates under the fleet authority in the area it is assigned, using task-group designations for its missions.

The group traces its history to Cruiser-Destroyer Group 3, formed in 1973. Since 2004 it has made multiple deployments to the Middle East, providing air support over Afghanistan and Iraq and conducting Maritime Security Operations. It earned the Humanitarian Service Medal for disaster relief in Indonesia after the 2004 tsunami.

Notable missions include involvement in Operation Infinite Reach in 1998 and later campaigns such as Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. In its 2010–11 deployment, the group’s air wing flew thousands of sorties in support of Afghanistan, conducted anti-piracy patrols, and trained with allied nations.

Today, Carrier Strike Group 9 remains a ready, multi-ship, multi-aircraft force with Theodore Roosevelt as its flagship, prepared to operate with partners around the world.
