Zulema Jattin Corrales
Zulema del Carmen Jattin Corrales (born July 31, 1969, in Lorica, Córdoba) is a Colombian politician who has served at the highest levels of Congress. She was a Member of the Chamber of Representatives for Córdoba from 1998 to 2006, and she led the Chamber as President from 2004 to 2005. She later served as a Senator from 2006 to 2009.
Her political career began at the local level, as a councilwoman in Lorica from 1990 to 1992. She comes from a political family; her father, Francisco José Jattin Safar, was also a longtime congressman.
Education and party life: She earned a BA from the Complutense University of Madrid and an MA from the Pontifical Xavierian University. Politically, she has been part of the Liberal Party (1998–2002) and the Liberal Opening Movement (2002–2005), with later ties to the Party of the U.
Key events: In 2008, the Supreme Court began preliminary investigations into links with paramilitary leaders and trafficking networks, but no conclusive charges were filed at that time. On May 11, 2009, the Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant for related parapolitics allegations. During her arrest, her father died of a heart attack. She renounced her seat on May 13, 2009, and the case moved to the Attorney General, though the Supreme Court would later decide that such cases involving members of Congress remained under its jurisdiction. She was replaced in Congress by Jairo Mantilla Colmenares. She was briefly under house arrest as the primary caregiver for her infant, but was released seven months later when the legal time limits expired. In September 2010, she was summoned for questioning on calumny and slander related to statements made after her arrest; she later recanted, but the court proceeded with charges.
Personal life: She married Luis Humberto Gómez Gallo in 2002 and divorced in 2003; they have a daughter, Zulema María Gómez Jattin.
