Mehdi Tabatabaei Shirazi (March 21, 1936 – May 17, 2018) was an Iranian Shia cleric and conservative politician. He served as a member of the Parliament of Iran twice: from 1984 to 1988 for Mashhad and Kalat, and from 2004 to 2008 for Tehran, Rey, Shemiranat and Eslamshahr. He was affiliated with the Combatant Clergy Association and the Fada'iyan-e Islam, and in 2004 he joined the Alliance of Builders of Islamic Iran. Tabatabaei was described as a well-known moderate conservative cleric. He was a critic of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and supported the Iran deal. In 2009, after the disputed election, he said he wished he had died before those events. He was born in Rafsanjan and died in Tehran at the age of 82.
