Cambridgeshire (European Parliament constituency)
Cambridgeshire was a European Parliament constituency in the United Kingdom that elected one MEP by the first-past-the-post system. It existed from 1979 to 1984 and then again from 1994 to 1999.
Creation and first abolition:
- Created in 1979 for the first European Parliament elections. It covered the Westminster constituencies of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Isle of Ely, Peterborough, and Wellingborough.
- Abolished in 1984 after boundary changes. The area was redistributed: Cambridge, Huntingdon, North East Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and South West Cambridgeshire became part of Cambridge and Bedfordshire North; Wellingborough went to Northamptonshire; South East Cambridgeshire was transferred to Suffolk.
Recreation and second abolition:
- Re-created in 1994 from parts of Cambridge and Bedfordshire North and Suffolk. It then included the Westminster constituencies of Cambridge, Huntingdon, North East Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, South East Cambridgeshire and South West Cambridgeshire.
- Abolished in 1999 when Great Britain moved to proportional representation for European elections; its areas became part of the East of England region for European elections.
